ABOUT

I’m Joel Feren – a dietitian, nutrition consultant, keynote speaker, writer, TV presenter and recipe developer.

For more than a decade, I’ve been translating nutrition science into practical advice, delicious food and engaging conversations.

I work with brands, businesses, media and organisations to make nutrition more appealing, practical and relevant. I’m also passionate about men’s health, helping men build the knowledge, confidence and skills to look after themselves through food.

My work brings together food, behaviour, masculinity and modern health.

Because nutrition is about far more than nutrients on a plate.

FOOD IS MORE THAN SUSTENANCE

I’ve always loved food.

Not just for what it does for our bodies, but for what it means to us.

Food brings people together. It connects us to culture, creates memories, marks celebrations and gives us a way to care for ourselves and the people around us.
Sure, we need to eat our vegetables. But there’s also a time for your aunty’s cheesecake, fish and chips with the kids, or whatever food brings a little joy to an ordinary weeknight.

I don’t believe good nutrition needs to come at the expense of enjoyment. In fact, I think the two belong together.

My approach is evidence-based and non-diet, but never about rules, restriction or taking the fun out of food. I want to help people build a healthy, sustainable relationship with food that works for real life.

MY FOOD PHILOSOPHY

Growing up, my relationship with food was complicated.

Like many people, I was taught that certain foods were ‘bad’, that eating them was ‘naughty’ and that I needed to ‘watch what I ate’. Over time, that messaging contributed to a relationship with food shaped by restriction, guilt and regret.

Early in my career, I started to question the idea that restricting certain foods was the answer to better health. If anything, making foods forbidden seemed to make us want them more.

I realised that a healthier approach wasn’t about being more disciplined. It was about changing the way we think about food.

Food can fuel us, but it can also bring joy, connection, celebration and nostalgia.

And one of the simplest ways to build a better relationship with food is to get into the kitchen.

That’s a big part of why I love developing recipes. I get to combine nutrition expertise with culinary creativity and show that nutritious food can also be genuinely delicious.

Whether it’s fried rice, lasagne or a simple midweek dinner, there are countless ways to make everyday meals more nutritious without making them boring.

Good food doesn’t need to be complicated. It just needs to work for you.

WHY MEN’S HEALTH?

Men’s health has become an increasingly important part of my work.

Men don’t always engage with traditional health and nutrition messaging, and too much of the conversation still focuses on diets, body composition, protein and quick fixes.

I’m interested in something broader.

How can we make nutrition practical and relevant to the way men actually live?

That might mean understanding what to eat, learning how to cook, knowing your way around the supermarket, finding meals that work around a busy schedule, or simply feeling more confident about making food choices.

I believe cooking is a health skill, not a hobby.
As a men’s health dietitian, I want to help more men take an active role in their health through food – without the guilt, fear or unnecessary rules.

FROM NUTRITION TO THE KITCHEN

I’ve worked across private practice, corporate health, culinary nutrition, and media and communications, and I’ve partnered with some of Australia’s leading food, health, and FMCG brands.

I’ve also delivered keynotes and workshops, developed recipes, appeared across TV, radio, print and digital media, and worked with businesses as a consultant to communicate nutrition in ways that are credible, engaging and commercially relevant.

One career highlight was meeting and working with Jamie Oliver, whose approach to making good food accessible to everyone has long influenced my work.
